A goal-setting framework from NLP

What is a Well-Formed Outcome?

In Neuro-Linguistic Programming (NLP), a "Well-Formed Outcome" is a powerful framework for goal setting. It goes far beyond simply stating a wish (like "I want to be happy"). It is a structured process designed to help you clarify your goals, align them with your values, and create a realistic, actionable pathway to success while avoiding internal conflicts and unintended consequences.

Think of it as the difference between merely wanting something in theory and engineering it in practice. When an outcome is "well-formed," your brain has a much higher probability of figuring out how to achieve it.

The 6 Core Criteria

Each criterion sharpens a vague wish into an outcome your mind can actually pursue.

1

Stated in the Positive

Focus on what you want, not what you want to avoid.

Weak: "I don't want to be stressed."
Strong: "I want to feel calm and in control."
2

Self-Initiated & Maintained

The goal must be within your direct control, not dependent on others changing.

Weak: "I want my boss to appreciate me."
Strong: "I want to communicate my achievements clearly to my boss."
3

Sensory-Specific Evidence

How will you know you have it? What will you see, hear, and feel?

Weak: "I want to be successful."
Strong: "I will see a signed contract on my desk, hear my client say 'yes', and feel a sense of pride."
4

Contextualized

Specify when, where, and with whom you want this outcome.

Weak: "I want to be confident."
Strong: "I want to feel confident when speaking in front of the board on Tuesday mornings."
5

Resources Identified

What internal (confidence, focus) and external (money, time, mentors) resources do you need?

Identify what you already have and what you need to acquire to bridge the gap.
6

Ecology Check

Is this goal good for you and the systems you belong to (family, health, work)?

Question: "Will working 80 hours a week for this promotion negatively impact my health or family life?"
